Reputations in Bidding Fee Auctions∗

چکیده
This paper analyzes bidding fee auctions, the recent auction format that is a nonstandard relative of the war of attrition. In bidding fee auctions, the prize value diminishes as the auction progresses, and the person who pays the most does not usually win. With over 300,000 daily visitors in the U.S. alone, bidding fee auction websites are an increasingly common way to shop online.1 In my sample of 52 million individual bids, these auctions are characterized by overbidding as revenues routinely double prize values. Even experienced users frequently earn negative returns. Despite this apparent violation of individual rationality constraints, bidders generally respond to underlying economic incentives. In this paper, I identify the aggressive strategies employed by savvy users and I interpret the causes of their (relative) success.

Shill Bidding In Online English Auctions With A Random Number Of Bidders
Shill bidding has increased substantially with the explosion in the number of online auctions. For English auctions with conventional intermediation fee schedules and a continuous increment of the bid, sellers may profit from shill bidding, which is illegal. To deter shill bidding, Wang et al.31 designed a mechanism — the shill-deterrent fee schedule (SDFS) which makes shill bidding unprofitabl...
متن کاملIrregular Bidding from Opportunism: an Exploration of Shilling in Online Auctions
In electronic markets, seller information is often obscured or unavailable, which current theories of reputation and opportunism contend will motivate opportunistic behavior. We investigate how reputable and opportunistic behaviors are motivated in online auctions. This exploratory study examines irregular bidding, which occurs when a bidder makes a bid for an item in an auction, yet that bidde...
متن کاملShill Bidding in English Auctions
Shill bidding in English auction is the deliberate placing bids on the seller’s behalf to artificially drive up the price of his auctioned item. Shill bidding has been known to occur in auctions of high-value items like art and antiques where bidders’ valuations differ and the seller’s payoff from fraud is high. We prove that privatevalue English auctions with shill bidding can result in a high...
متن کاملPREMIUM BIDDING IN ONLINE AUCTIONS An Examination of Opportunism and Seller Preference
We investigate premium bidding in online auctions, where an item receives a higher bid than other identical items that currently are for sale and available for a lower bid. We report empirical results that find that premium bidding shares many characteristics with shill bidding, where a seller establishes a new identity to bid on his own product. The results lead us to believe that much of the ...
متن کاملAn Intermediation Shill-Deterrent Fee Schedule (SDFS)
Internet-based online auctions provide unprecedented opportunities for sellers to submit shill bids. Shill bidding increases the seller’s expected utility but deceives buyers and damages auctioneers’ reputation. Because the anonymity of the Internet makes it difficult to catch shill bidders through statistical analysis or encryption, we suggest that the most effective approach is to make it une...
